Screenshots with Windows10
If you need to take a screenshot with Windows10, there are multiple tools that you can use.
Still Images
If you need to record a still image of your screen, you have several options:
- To copy the entire screen to your clipboard, press the PrtScreen button on your keyboard.
- To copy the active window to your clipboard, press Alt + PrtScreen at the same time.
- To manually select a specific area of your screen you have two options:
- use the Snipping Tool.
- or, press Windows Start + Shift + S
- The screen will dim and the mouse pointer will change.
- You can drag to select a portion of the screen to capture.
- The screenshot will be copied to the clipboard, which you can paste into another program
- To quickly save the image to your local machine, press Windows Start + PrtScreen.
- This saves the entire screen as an image file.
- You can find it in the "Pictures" folder, in a subfolder called "Screenshots."
GIF Images
If you need to record a series of actions or events, a GIF recording can be helpful.
The following tool works well on 32-bit and 64-bit Windows computers:
Video Recordings
Advanced Users may prefer to use the built-in Windows 10 Screen Recording tool, which records video and audio and stores it in an MP4 format.
- To activate this tool, press Windows Start + G
- Your video captures will be stored in the following folder:
- C:\Users\YourUserNameHere\Videos\Captures
