How to Create a WebVTT File

When working with Closed Captions, content authors will need to create these files in order to add captions to a Presentation. The steps to do so are as follows:

  • Create a Notepad Document (Or download the attached template)
  • Follow this format to start the document:
    WEBVTT

    00:00:02.000 --> 00:00:10.000
    [Enter your text here]

    00:00:10.100 --> 00:00:20.000
    [Enter your text here]
    Note:
    • The first line must always contain the text WEBVTT followed by a carriage return (enter).
    • The next line contains the time the text will appear on the screen following: hours:minutes:seconds.milliseconds
    • The number on the left is when the text starts to appear and the number on the right of the arrow is when the text disappears. Leave a period of time between closed captions.

  • Once you have your caption file completed, save the document and edit the title to ensure that instead of the file ending in ".txt" it ends in ".webvtt"
